Reviews: Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting from USA- Machine-stitched feathers, from simple to fancy, are explained in detail in this comprehensive guide. You’ll learn to stitch the basic traditional feather, and then see how easy it can be to make heirloom feathers to compliment your quilt. Sally teaches how to fill any space with feathers, whether it be individual pieces, blocks, sashings, or borders, with her no-backtracking technique.
New Zealand Quilter from New Zealand- Feathers are a popular quilting motif – but the accurate backstitching required for traditional feathers makes them difficult for machine quilters to perfect. “Hooked on Feathers” by Sally Terry addresses this with a free-motion technique based on a hook shape that involves no backtracking. The “hooks” are less plump than traditional designs and create an inner hook. They are ideal for borders or large filler sections of quilting and can be as simple or ornate as you choose. Like all machine quilting, practice will ensure success but this book has some good techniques, exercises and patterns to get you started.
California Bookwatch from USA- All kinds of sewing machines can be used for this free-motion technique for versatile no-mark feathers, which eliminates backtracking and provides quick, eye-catching quilter’s results. Libraries strong in quilting how-to guides will appreciate a step-by-step approach to creating machine-quilted feathers, which blends colorful examples with charts and instructions for polished results.
Testimonials:
"No question, just compliment. I didn't know what I was getting with "Hooked on Feathers. I love feathers so I ordered the book. Fabulous--I get compliments on my backtracking BUT I just tried the hooked feather today. Fabulous--It is so much faster. Sometimes we just don't have the time--I'm doing wheelchair quilts that will be destroyed by the washing at the nursing home. With the hooked feather it is taking me so little time to make these quilts gorgeous and special because that hooked feather is so fast. I just wanted to tell you that even if people aren't having problems with backtracking (I do have my days) they should get your book. The feathers are FUN, Easy, FAST, and gorgeous. If you haven't figured it out by now, I am thrilled thrilled thrilled. Thank you for taking the time and doing the work to help others enjoy their quilting more. Your hard work to share with us is so appreciated. You will never find out all the joy you have helped spread." Deb Cavanaugh
"Sally, received my book today. It's wonderful and can't wait to start playing with the feathers. I love to do them so this book will be fun to try." Jacqueline
"Good Morning Sally, I just wanted you to know that I have your book "Hooked On Feathers" and I am hooked! I love doing them. They are so pretty and can be adapted into so many beautiful designs. Thank-you so much for your creativity!" Brenda Closson
I got your book thinking it would be different feather designs which it was but I didn't expect the hooked feather. I have good backtracking days and bad backtracking days but now I think why bother. Your hooked feathers are so fast to make. They are so versatile. I can make long and short feathers.
I can fill odd spaces. Can you tell I am thrilled.
I had a some backing and batting left after a quilt so I put muslin on top of it and tried your feathers. I split it into two pieces making two table runners about 12" x 45". I had been making 2 wheelchair quilts at the same time also splitting them apart. I put an S shaped motif on both of them also since it would not show in the print. It went so well and they were so gorgeous, I put on thread that would show up and quilted away. (Check out her pictures)
Thanks for your work to share this technique with all of us. It is fast and easy but most of all beautiful. I can't wait to do the other charity quilts so I can try the fancier freathers you showed. I have to close because I have to go order your DVD. Deb Cavanaugh
